Are you passionate about radio? Do you dream of becoming a radio presenter? Now is the perfect time to turn that dream into reality with the Learning Waves Radio Presenter Course 2024! Applications are open now until Friday the 12th of July 2024.
We recently caught up with Cabrina Conaty, a graduate of the Learning Waves Radio Presenter Course, to hear about her journey and experiences. Cabrina, who is now the producer and presenter of The 11 to 1 Show on LMFM, shared her inspiring story and the impact the course has had on her career.
“Before the course, I was living in the UK where I had trained as an actor. Much of my work was in voiceover, which sparked my interest in the audio industry,” Cabrina explained. She discovered the Learning Waves course through a radio advert. “It just sounded brilliant, and I thought, ‘I may as well apply.’”
The course provided Cabrina with a comprehensive understanding of the radio industry and experience. “The Learning Waves Radio Presenter Course has been hugely beneficial for me,” she said. One of her favourite training modules was Speech and Voice Training with Eric Dixon, Eric Dixon Media. “I’ve done a lot of voice training as an actor, but I found Eric’s class so engaging. He’s kept in touch and is very encouraging.”
Cabrina also highlighted the practical aspects of the course, such as visiting KCLR and meeting John Keane, who is now the presenter of The Spin Home on WLRFM. John showed the group around the studio, inviting them into the inner workings of a radio station. “It was great to see the practical operations of the desk in action,” she recalled.
When asked to describe the course in three words, Cabrina chose “engaging, preparation, and opportunity.” She strongly recommends the course to anyone interested in radio. “I began with no experience in radio, and I got such a vast overview of the industry. The opportunity for work experience to get hands-on experience can’t be underestimated. It was fabulous.”
Since completing the course, Cabrina’s radio journey has been nothing short of exhilarating. She completed her placement at Today FM as part of the Radio Presenter Course. Following this she continued to work in Today FM where she honed her skills as a producer. During this time, she received invaluable guidance from Fyona Smith, Managing Editor, and John Caddell, Assistant Managing Editor. Cabrina then moved to the Newstalk newsroom, followed by a working at 98FM. She later hosted her own show on Saturday mornings on iRadio. She then worked in SPIN 1038 on SPIN nights with Marty Guilfoyle. In June, Cabrina embarked on her latest adventure as the producer and presenter of The 11-1 Show on LMFM.
When asked about her advice to anyone thinking about applying for the course Cabrina said, “Just do it. If you have any interest in radio, it will ignite that passion and give you the knowledge and experience you need.”
