Ministers praise work of Independent Radio during Election 2024.
The hard work of independent radio stations in covering election campaigns and counts and in providing fair, balanced and accurate coverage, is recognised by many public representatives as a vital contribution to democracy and that has been shown in recent days was shared yesterday by the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland.
It was very welcome to hear the comments of Minister Norma Foley TD on this point when she said she hoped that work would never be under-estimated or under-appreciated. Speaking on Radio Kerry, she said she wished to acknowledge the high quality work of the station and other local media outlets during the election, "and the superb work that you do every single day but, particularly importantly, the work you do of getting truthful and honest information out there at all times."
"It is so so important that people have access to the truth, and to the facts," said Norma Foley. She praised the work of Radio Kerry bringing the facts to listeners, without fear or favour, "bringing the truth, bringing the facts, and putting them before the people."
The most recent Cathaoirleach of the Oireachtas Media Committee, Niamh Smyth TD, added her voice of praise, speaking on Shannonside Northern Sound as did Minister Heather Humphreys.
Deputy Smyth highly praised the quality of coverage on Shannonside Northern Sound and and said: "People want media outlets they can trust, that are objective that it is the truth, that their sources are followed up." She said people were now seeing social media as the Wild West in terms of made-up material about anyone or anything. Minister Humphreys said in a radio interview on the stations: "I want to congratulate Shannonside/Northern Sound on the wonderful election coverage. It really was great and you were getting accurate and up-to-date information and it was really well done".
Congratulations to all our members on such comprehensive, fair and accurate coverage of Election 2024.
