Mastering Adobe Audition- Audio Fundamentals and Editing for Radio.
Course Aims
This course is aimed at sound editors wanting to sharpen their basic skills and techniques of audio recording, editing, repair and multitrack mixing. This is hands-on training and attendees will complete a number of exercises to introduce the editing of sound clips in the both the Waveform and Multitrack environments.
Course Brief
The course will cover the basics of recording, of Adobe Audition and will examine the common sound processing effects including Dynamics, Delay, Reverb and Noise Reduction. It will also examine audio restoration methods and techniques, from hum removal to sound and transient repair and recording into Audition.
The course will also extend your skills in using the Multitrack editor for mixing, editing music beds via sound loops and key framing volume (automation) using read/write/latch/touch modes.
Module 1 Audio Fundamentals and Gear
- Analog vs. Digital Audio: Explaining the differences and their impact on radio production.
- Microphone Types & Techniques: Condenser, dynamic, ribbon mics, and their ideal uses (e.g., interviews, music).
- Introduction to Adobe Audition Interface: A guided tour of the main tools and workspace.
- Weekly Task: Record a short voiceover using different mics (if available) or a smartphone. Experiment with mic positioning and note the differences in sound.
Module 2 - Recording and Basic Editing
- Audio Interfaces & Hardware: Brief overview of necessary gear (mixers, headphones).
- Recording in Audition: Setting levels, monitoring, and best practices.
- Basic Editing: Cutting, copying, fading, noise reduction.
- Weekly Task: Record a 5-minute mock interview. Edit it for clarity, removing any mistakes or long pauses
Module 3 - Mixing & Levels
- Understanding Levels (dB): What they are and why they matter in radio.
- EQ Basics: How to adjust frequencies for clearer sound.
- Volume Automation: Making smooth adjustments over time.
- Weekly Task: Find a song with separate instrument tracks (e.g., stems) and try mixing them in Audition.
Module 4 - Effects and Processing
- Compression: Taming dynamic range for consistent audio.
- Reverb & Delay: Adding space and depth.
- Other Effects (Chorus, Flanger, etc.): Creative sound design for promos and jingles.
- Weekly Task: Create a short radio jingle using music, sound effects, and voiceover. Experiment with effects.
Module 5 - Voiceovers and Narration
- Voiceover Techniques: Pacing, inflection, conveying emotion.
- Script Writing: Tips for clear and engaging narration.
- Audio Editing for Voiceovers: Cleaning up breaths, smoothing out delivery.
- Weekly Task: Write and record a 30-second promo for a fictional radio show.
Module 6 - Putting it all Together
- Creating a Radio Segment: Combining voiceovers, music, interviews, and effects.
- Exporting for Broadcast: File formats, bitrates, and loudness standards.
- Q&A and Troubleshooting: Addressing any lingering questions or challenges.
- Weekly Task: Produce a complete 5-minute radio segment (e.g., news, music feature).
Who is this content for?
This course is aimed at those who wish to upskill in the area of Adobe Audition. Participants must have access to the latest version of Adobe Audition in order to take part in the training.
