Mobile Journalism for Radio Certificate (Online).
Course Brief
In this course you will learn how to create content using your mobile phone and you will develop all the skills to perfect the art of photography, audio and video creation on your mobile phone. The course will be delivered by Glen Mulcahy from Titanium Media via the online platform, Zoom and it will be delivered on a modular basis. The course is certified and participants must complete all modules in order to gain the certificaiton.
Content
Module 1 Photography and Audio
In this module participants will :
- Understand the full functionality of the camera App
- Know how to control focus and exposure manually
- Understand the principles of composition
- Know advanced functionality like time-lapse, burst mode, slow motion, stop-frame animation.
- Know how to export bursts and live photos as GIFs/Videos
- Ability to identify mics for different audio situations
- Know how to capture broadcast quality audio using voice record pro
- Be familiar with audio editing applications on the device
- Know how to combine photographs and audio into a multi-media timeline.
- Know how to export that timeline and share it online.
- Overview of other Apps to share content and reversion for social
Module 2 Filimic Pro
In this module participants will learn to :
- Understand different video formats and sizes, bit rates and frame rates
- Understand the differences between filming with native camera and a pro camera app
- Be competent in the use of a Pro Camera Application like FiLMiC Pro
- Know the required setting for broadcast
- Know how to capture audio and set a correct level with extrernal mics
- Know how to use Focus Peaking and Zebra for correct exposure and focus
- Understand White balance and how to manage the controls in the App
- Know how to switch between basic/intermediate and advanced full manual modes
- Understand the two workflows in Flimic (On Device editing / Off device editing)
Module 3 Filming Sequences
- Broad understanding of how mobile is being used by other broadcasters
- Understand how many composition principles from course 1 carry over to video
- Understand the need for picture led filming and editing
- Understand the 5 shot sequence filming concept
In this module we will watch several stories that demonstrate some of the strengths and weaknesses of mobile filming. This will then result in a practical exercise which can be conducted in isolation at home but which will explore the 5 shot principle.
Module 4(a) Editing using Luma Fusion ( for IOS users only)
Building on the previous module the participants will learn to…
- Create a new project to TX standards
- Add sequence clips to timeline

- Know how to access fine tuning editing tools
- Understand the principles of pacing and edits points

Module 4(b) Editing using Kinemaster ( for Android users only)

Module 5 Shooting Interviews and Standups
Using FiLMiC Pro on iOS or Android* the participants will learn

- The principle of Proxemics and how it relates to interview shots

- Looking Room
- Levels
- Open Questions
- Basic knowledge of light setups for interviews inc 3 point lighting
- Choosing the right mic for the right scenario
- Identifying suitable locations for image and sound

Module 6(a) Advanced Editing using Luma Fusion
Participants will learn advanced editing features to include :
- Frame & Fit / Resizing Tools and Keyframes
- Speed control, Ramping and Reverse tools
- Advanced Audio controls, level control, pan and Keyframes
- Grading, Colour correction and Effects
- Mixing Audio and Setting levels
- Advanced timeline editing techniques (frame forward/reverse)
- J cut and L cut editing
- Detaching Audio from video
- Creating video layers
- Adding Text and Graphics
- Project Exports Setting
- Format Reversioning from 16:9 to 9:16 vertical or 1:1 Square
- Project mix down and export.
- Transfer methods to send files

Module 7 LiveStreaming
In this module we will explore the process of going live via Smartphone both on social platforms like Facebook Live, Periscope, YouTube Live and Instagram TV and also Zoom.
We will also explore the process and practicalities of live streaming via professional solutions like Luci Live, TieLine ReportIT for radio and TVU/Dejero/LiveU etc for pro video.

- Undestanding the potential of social livestreaming
- Finding you “voice” in the noise
- Practical setups Tripods, Grips, Mics and Lights
- Measuring connectivity
- Managing Social interactions and trolls
- Downloading your broadcast for editing on the device
Pro Livestreaming
- The differences between social and pro solutions
- Choosing a suitable location
- Conducting a risk assessment and identifying an exit strategy
- Checking connectivity and ways to improve it
- Setups including IFB
- Procedure and Workflow
- Additional Functionality (eg. Store and Forward)
- Overview of Multi-camera solutions and how they could be used.
Assessment and Certification
The module will involve practical exercises(upload images via Dropbox link) and live feedback and review. Participants will be required to complete the assessments in order to qualify for certification at the end of the full programme.
Trainer - Glen Mulcahy, Titanium Media
In 2017, after 19 years in the broadcast industry, Glen Mulcahy founded Titanium Media. Titanium is a media training and consultancy business designed to deliver the highest quality professional training and to ultimately empower people as digital content creators. In his former role as head of innovation with RTÉ, Glen led the introduction of video journalism and mobile journalism across the entirety of RTÉ.
Over the last six years he has also travelled extensively delivering training for clients like Aljazeera, Oracle, Symantec, BBC, NRK, YLE and many more. At home his training has been cross platform with courses designed for the Irish Times, TG4, and through Learning Waves many of the independent radio sector. He also has a selection of e-Learning courses available online as part of the Thomson Foundation “Journalism Now” initiative.
Glen is an acknowledged authority on mobile content creation. He has spoken on this subject and media futures at conferences like IBC Amsterdam (x2), EBU News Summit (x3) Circom conference, news:Rewired, JoongAng Ilbo Media conference S.Korea and many others.
He is also the founder of RTÉ Mojocon-an international mobile journalism conference which ran annually from 2015-2017. He is now working on the evolution of the event as an independent conference entitled: “Mojofest”.
